ALBERT AF EKENSTAM
The Swedish songwriter Albert af Ekenstam has just released his new EP ”Hundred Miles” this August. The EP contains four songs including the single ”Our Stories”. The release shows a new side of the swedes sound, and a stronger focus on the songwriting craft. About the process of making the EP Albert Af Ekenstam says:
”The EP is recorded in a special time in my life. I started the process without any clear idea with the music. I recorded the songs with my friend Daniel Ögren, and many more of my friends have contributed to the songs.”
The debut ”Ashes” was released back in 2016, and received great response. It also resulted in invitations to showcase festivals across Europe such as Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg, The Great Escape in Brighton and Eurosonic. Since the winter of 2017 Albert has had less focus on live shows, and has been focused more on the songwriting for the new EP and a forthcoming new release in 2019.
It’s been over two decades since the songwriter packed his bags and left Bloomington, Indiana, the Midwestern town where he was born and spent his formative years. He returns to that place, both creatively and physically, with his seventh studio album, Immortal Americans
. Written after a tumultuous period that found Lucas getting sober, supporting his partner through a battle with cancer, and breaking up with his longtime record label. Immortal Americans
is a clear-eyed album for murkier times, rooted in stripped-down songs that find the artist reflecting upon the changes in both his hometown and himself.
is Austin Lucas’ homecoming album, created during a whirlwind period of tumult and regrowth. With its gothic heartland sound and autobiographical lyrics, it’s also Lucas at his most honest, rooted in a string of largely unamplified anthems that don’t rely on electricity to pack a punch.
Warshy (as in, shy of war) is the new solo venture from Crazy Arm frontman, Darren Johns. Launched last year in the USA, while travelling on a West Coast tour with kindred spirits, Larry & His Flask, Warshy is an opportunity for Johns to explore the roots/Americana influences that have underpinned Crazy Arm's forte, and strip them to the bone.
Relying on a more intimate and less abrasive approach, the ultimate idea is to create a pool of musicians and singers that come and go around the core of the solo performance. But, for the most part, it's one man and his Gretsch guitar, kick drum, banjo, acoustic guitar and neuroses. Which isn’t to say that Warshy doesn’t pack a punch. The likes of ‘North Of Misery’ and ‘Retaliation’ betray a raw, rootsy rock’n’roll energy despite the on-stage limitations; while ‘Operation Chaos’ and ‘Nazi Deaths Matter’ reveal a more introspective yet politically-charged rationale.
Warshy’s first proper tour in Dec 2017, with Chicago folk-punks, Flatfoot 56, was a great success that saw Johns hone his skills and find his feet as a confident solo player.
